Design for Wellness : Spaces for Tomorrow

Today, it’s COVID-19 and we may see a host of other viruses in the future. It’s probably the best time to step back and see how we design spaces for tomorrow. Sanjay Agarwal, MD  & Co-Founder, FRDC lists down the following 6 big ‘Activations’ in future designing for any environment or space for better wellbeing of humans.

1- ‘Activated Antimicrobial’ -for any material or surface which we are likely to touch. From door knobs to any hardwares, laminates, composite panels, paints and finishes, glass, veneers, faucets, upholstery etc.

2- ‘Activated Sterilisation’- A more permanent and user friendly solution to frequent hand wash and sanitisation- built in anti germicidal UV lights in furniture cabinetry and overall space.

3- ‘AI activation’ - Use of voice and face recognition AI in more smaller applications to avoid body contacts. For example- calling lifts, opening doors, switching lights and use of appliances etc.

4-‘Activated sensors’- Increased use of proximity and IR, heat sensors in activation of lights, fans, AC and other nominal frequently operated equipments etc.

5- ‘Activated HVAC’- Use of anti virus, anti pollution air filters and TFAs in HVAC system even in smaller spaces like homes.

6- ‘Activated Bots’- Some of the mundane things in retail and other human transaction spaces can be left to programmed bots which can replace humans contact.
